The future home of the UNC basketball program has been one of the hottest topics in Chapel Hill, as more important details have emerged in this ongoing debate.

On Wednesday, the University of North Carolina released an article detailing where they are currently at in this process. You can view the entire article by clicking the link above, as there are many factors that are being considered.

Here's some important details you need to know about this topic:

Three top contenders emerge

At this stage in the game, it appears that the university is focusing on three options:

-Renovating the current Dean E. Smith Center
-Building a new campus expansion site in Carolina North
-Building a new arena at Odum Village

There were initially seven options that were heavily considered, but ultimately, it seems like the aforementioned trio are the finalists.

Six guiding principles

Senior associate athletic director Rick Steinbacher joined Jones Angell and Adam Lucas on episode No. 2 of "The Arena Discussion" segment of the Carolina Insider podcast.

In Steinbacher's words, the research being done in finding the best arena option is being viewed with six guiding principles in mind:

  • Deliver the premier basketball-first arena in the history of college sports
  • Preserve the legacy and tradition of Carolina basketball
  • Best-in-class training facilities for both men’s and women’s basketball programs
  • Improve student seating for maximum in-game impact
  • Offer an elite fan experience
  • Revenue generation to fund and sustain the basketball program at an elite level while also supporting fielding 26 other sports in partnership with Carolina football

What are the costs?

Here's the project cost (and net cash flow) that each location will accrue:

Smith Center Renovation: Approximately $591 million in project costs ($4 million in annual net cash flow)
Odum Village: Around $703 million in project costs ($25 million in annual net cash flow)
Carolina North: Around $786 million in project costs ($26 million in annual net cash flow)

If you're looking at it from a profit-based perspective, building a new arena (either at Odum Village of Carolina North) would be the more formidable option, taking into consideration the ever-changing landscape of college athletics (especially with the current world of NIL).

Has a decision been made?

No (well, that's at least what they are telling us).

There are still plenty of details to still iron out, as it appears that the final three options are being carefully reviewed by the stakeholders involved. With the date of a potential renovation completion being for the 2028-2029 season, you'd have to think that we're getting closer to a decision.

Remember: the Carolina North project is supposed to launch in Summer of 2027. If the goal is to move the Tar Heels there, expect that decision to be made with ample time to spare before the project gets underway.
