NC State newcomer hates Hubert Davis, but not for the reason you're thinking

What did Hubert Davis ever do to this guy?!

Some things in life are obvious.

For example: it's not very likely that student-athletes from the likes of Duke or NC State are fond of North Carolina in any way.

Even in the new world of the transfer portal, newcomers quickly find hatred toward their new school's biggest foes. This was evident during ACC Tipoff when Darrion Williams, a transfer from Texas Tech who is now at NC State, made it very clear how he feels about UNC.

More specifically, his hatred toward Hubert Davis.

The easy answer as to why Williams has some hostility toward the UNC basketball program's head coach is due to how the situation with Ven-Allen Lubin went down. Now teammates at NC State, Williams very likely knows of Lubin's situation, hearing the three-time transfer's side to the story.

While Lubin's case plays a role in Williams' disdain of Davis, the real issue stems from another former Tar Heel's situation at North Carolina.

We all remember Kerwin Walton, right?

Williams and Walton were teammates at Texas Tech, so it's extremely unlikely that Williams even considered North Carolina as a transfer. Even if North Carolina put on a full-court press, it's likely that Walton's take on the situation turned Williams away from ever considering wearing the Carolina Blue.

"I think their coach did Ven wrong," Williams explained, "And then he did Kerwin Walton wrong -- my old teammate at Texas Tech -- when he was there. So yeah, I just don't like the guy."

Apparently, the issue seems to stem from Lubin and Walton's belief that they weren't "properly utilized" in Hubert Davis' system.

Let's rewind a bit:

In the case of Walton, it's pretty tough to play a guy a significant amount of minutes when he provides essentially nothing on the defensive side of the floor. Unless he's shooting the lights out of the gym, it doesn't make much sense to have him on the court.

For Lubin, the Tar Heels were tremendously undersized a season ago, and he actually became an integral part of the starting unit down the stretch. Maybe, just maybe, Lubin's decision to leave had to do with the fact that North Carolina brought in Henri Veesaar to add size in the paint, and Lubin was looking for more playing time, something the UNC basketball program probably couldn't offer with the amount of length they brought in this offseason.

Credit Williams for defending his teammates. He believes in his guys and will stand by them regardless. However, the Wolfpack newcomer is grasping at straws here trying to generate "hate" toward the UNC basketball program, looking to add fuel to a fire that is barely a spark in the eyes of many in Chapel Hill.
