"North Carolina can either keep Hubert Davis another year as head coach, or it can get serious about its basketball program, but it cannot do both."

Everyone is simply outraged by UNC's 82-78 loss in overtime to VCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, as many are calling for a change of the guard in Chapel Hill.

National analyst Dan Wolken, a Senior Writer at Yahoo Sports, didn't hold back with his assessment of the future of the Tar Heels.

UNC is at a major crossroads

In his article about the subject, Wolken was blunt with the questions that need to be asked by those in charge of the major decision-making for the UNC basketball program:

"Have the standards at North Carolina been lowered to such an extent that Davis can come back for a sixth season without repercussions? Do the boosters and administrators in Chapel Hill really believe, after watching Davis put a mediocre product on the floor for three straight years, that he’s the guy who can get their program back into the national title mix the way it should be every year?"

The evidence is "undeniable"

Wolken believes that this situation can go one of two ways for the UNC basketball program.

"At some point, though, the body of evidence is undeniable. North Carolina can have a nice program with Davis at the helm, and hope to get lucky every so often in the tournament. It is unlikely to have an elite one."

In Wolken's opinion, UNC can be content with being a "nice program" that has the potential to make a run every so often. If that's the route they choose to take, he firmly believes there's no chance that UNC gets back to being an elite program.

The decision will definitely be one that has major implications on the future of the program.
