It's official: Michael Malone has signed his contract to become the 20th head coach in the history of the UNC basketball program.
Ahead of his official press conference to be introduced as the program's new leader on Tuesday night, details of his contract terms have emerged.
One this is for sure: UNC paid top-dollar to get their guy!
Michael Malone's contract details have been revealed
North Carolina has made a strong investment in Malone, agreeing to a six-year, $50M dollar contract with their new head coach. Not only will Malone be making approximately $8.3M per season, but his annual value will rank him among the top-paid college coaches in the sport.

Pete Thamel of ESPN projects Malone's contract will make him the second-highest paid coach in college basketball, just behind Bill Self of Kansas on the list.
Can confirm from ESPN sources that Michael Malone is set to average more than $8.3 million per year on his six year deal. That projects to put him behind Bill Self as the second-highest paid coach in college basketball. @murphsturph first reported. https://t.co/ttywkOiVUH

While you might think that the Tar Heels overpaid a bit to get Malone, who never has been a head coach at the college level, North Carolina has made it well-known that they were willing (and able) to flood the resources into the program in order to steer it back in the right direction. With no buyout price attached to Malone, it probably gave North Carolina more wiggle room to work with in terms of budget, but in order to get a top-tier caliber coach, you must pony up and spend the money to get him.

Of course, it remains to be see what the buyout figures are within the contract structure. It's likely that UNC put some protections on its investment to ensure that they will receive a large pay day in the event that an NBA team comes calling and Malone elects to entertain it.
For now, we won't worry about that. The focus now is on the present, as a new era of Carolina basketball is officially set to begin with Michael Malone at the helm.
