It's safe to say that Michael Malone and UNC are looking far and wide for transfer help in the portal. Malone is busy trying to fill out his roster and while there's a ton of focus on Terrence Brown and Juke Harris, they aren't the only ones worth monitoring moving forward.
Michael Malone is looking to land a talented transfer and stick it to NC State
As it turns out, the Tar Heels are also showing strong interest in a pair of NC State players looking for new homes. We previously covered Malone going after Matt Able, but 247Sports' Travis Branham confirmed that Malone is also in contact with Paul McNeil. Can you imagine if the Heels land either guy, or both? People in Raleigh would hit the panic button if that happened.
“They are still involved with some highly-impactful, highly-talented transfers out there in the portal including Matt Able and Paul McNeil,” Branham said. “Paul McNeil is a scoring guard out of NC State, their arch rival and he could be one to watch here moving forward. Matt Able similarly out of NC State was a former Top 30 recruit in the class of 2025 with a tremendous amount of upside.”
UNC is showing interest in NC State transfers Matt Able and Paul McNeil
You don't say? Starting with McNeil, the Rockingham, N.C. product averaged nearly 14 points per game last season. As for Able, he chipped in with nearly nine points for the Wolfpack and Will Wade, who is now the head coach at LSU.
The interest in these two NC state players sure is intriguing, especially after what happened last offseason. We're of course talking about big man Ven-Allen Lubin entering the transfer portal and then ultimately signing to play for Wade.
It caught us all totally off guard, as VAL hinted he was planning to return to Chapel Hill. Instead, NC State pulled a fast one on Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels. That's why some revenge would be pretty dang sweet if either McNeil or Able gives Malone some good news here pretty soon.
The transfer portal is open until April 21, so the assumption is that the Heels will add some new playmakers sooner rather than later. Again, countless eyes are on Brown and Harris, but McNeil and Able are also hearing from UNC and Malone. Depending on how much Malone wants the two youngsters, he should be working ASAP to get them on campus for a visit.
