Michael Malone and UNC might not be done on the high school recruiting trail

Could there be room for one more Class of 2026 standout to add to next year's roster?

With most of the focus currently on the international prospect market, UNC is still exploring every possible option to improve next year's roster.

A new option has emerged from the high school graduating Class of 2026, as the Tar Heels are now in the mix for an uncommitted senior who is viewed as a four-star prospect.

A former LSU commit is set to make an official visit to UNC

Kevin Thomas, a four-star prospect who was previously committed to LSU, is set to take an official visit to Chapel Hill this week. Joe Tipton of On3 was the first to report the upcoming visit.

This is a new name who has surfaced on North Carolina's radar. A 6-foot-7 forward out of Sagemont Prep (Florida), Thomas re-opened his recruitment following LSU's coaching change in late March. He is regarded as a top-100 player in his graduating class, coming in at No. 94 overall in Rivals' latest rankings.

The Tar Heels weren't involved in his initial recruitment, but he did earn a ton of interest from various programs. He earned offers from the likes of Auburn, Florida State, Miami,  Oklahoma State, Dayton, Washington, Tennessee, Cal, Mississippi State, among others before ultimately committing to LSU.

If you're looking for a breakdown of what Thomas brings to the table, Jamie Shaw of On3 provides the scoop on his overall game at this stage in his basketball journey:

Kevin Thomas is a twitchy athlete and was at his best getting downhill in transition. He showed some flashes in the half-court, but will need to continue working on making plays off movement. He has upside as a defender with some intriguing long-term traits to work with.

Post-lottery mock drafts seem to have a consensus landing spot for Caleb Wilson

As a guy who could be a developmental piece for Michael Malone and the Tar Heels staff to work with, Thomas might be one of those diamond in the rough type of additions. In need of additional size and length, Thomas has promising upside as a defender and also has shown some flashes offensively, as the coaching staff must see some potential that they would love to try and unlock.

The majority of next season's roster is falling into place, but there's still some spots left for Malone and his staff to work with. If his visit goes well, Thomas could claim one of those spots, adding one more piece to the puzzle for the 2026-2027 Tar Heels.
