Michael Malone has added yet another former Tar Heel (and national champion) to his first coaching staff at North Carolina.

Brandon Robinson is set to join the UNC basketball program's staff

Inside Carolina first reported that Brandon Robinson has been added to the UNC basketball program's coaching staff. He returns home to Chapel Hill to take the next step in his coaching career.

Robinson played his entire college basketball career at North Carolina from 2016 to 2020. He was a member of the 2017 national championship squad, finishing his college career with 532 points in 130 games played.

This will not be the first time Robinson is part of the staff at North Carolina. In 2021, Robinson was hired as the program's first-ever graduate assistant, a role Hubert Davis filled shortly after taking over as head coach.

Michael Malone adds another well-rounded coach to his staff at North Carolina

After serving in the graduate assistant role during the Tar Heels' run to the national championship game, Robinson took a job as an assistant video coordinator with the Charlotte Hornets. After one season with the Hornets, Robinson took on the same role with the Utah Jazz, one he fulfilled from 2022 to 2025.

Last July, Robinson became an assistant coach for Salt Lake City Stars, Utah’s G League affiliate. This was his first experience as a bench coach, one that should greatly benefit him as he looks to advance his coaching career.

It's unclear what role Robinson will play on Malone's coaching staff, but it doesn't appear he will be one of the five assistant coaches on the sidelines during the 2026-2027 season. However, Robinson's experience in video coordinating could be very useful and insightful, adding an additional layer to the team's strategic planning.

With Robinson's return to Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels' new-look staff has a member from each of the previous five national championship squads. Buzz Peterson, who has worked behind the scenes with the program, was part of the 1982 squad, while Pat Sullivan represents the 1993 squad. Sean May (2005) and Deon Thompson (2009) were part of the 2000s title teams while Robinson was a player on the program's latest national title squad.

The hope is that all of these former Tar Heels (who have resumes of success during their playing days at North Carolina) can help guide the current wave of players to a similar level of success.
