Welcome back, Melkart Abou Jaoude!

Ahead of their clash with No. 3-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Abou Jaoude, who missed the last two games with a hand/wrist injury, will return against the Fighting Irish.

Abou Jaoude's return is major news for the Tar Heels as they aim to secure a major upset.

Melkart Abou Jaoude's return is major news for UNC's defense

Although there was hope he could return for the Clemson game, Abou Jaoude remained sidelined, giving him nearly four weeks to heal the injury.

Remember: the injury occurred in the season opener against TCU in Ireland, a game he left but returned to. Thanks to two bye weeks (one before back-to-back games against ETSU and Clemson and one after), gave him what might just be the proper rest for his injury to heal, now allowing him to be closer to full strength for his return to the field.

It's never easy to replace the production of a guy who led the ACC in sacks a season ago, but UNC's defensive front has done a very solid job in his absence.

The emergence of Xavier Lewis has been the x-factor for the defense, as he comes into Saturday afternoon's game leading the country with six sacks. What makes Abou Jaoude's return even more intriguing is the fact that we haven't seen much of them together this season, making it difficult for Notre Dame to prepare for what might be coming in terms of pressure on quarterback CJ Carr.

This seems to be a very big advantage for Bill Belichick, one of the greatest defensive minds we've ever seen.

North Carolina's defense will ultimately decide whether UNC can pull off the upset against the Fighting Irish. If this unit keeps doing its thing and makes life difficult for Notre Dame's offense, North Carolina has a good chance to defend its home field and secure a statement win.

Abou Jaoude and the Tar Heels welcome Notre Dame for a noon kick-off time at Kenan Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
