Maximo Adams is already showing he'll be a major contributor to UNC from day one.
An 11-point, six-rebound game in 18 minutes off the bench against USC showed the type of role play this season. One exhibition won’t define his season, but it certainly gave Tar Heel fans a reason to pay attention.
As Michael Malone figures out how his pieces fit together, Adams has the opportunity to become more than just a freshman waiting his turn.
What you need to know about Maximo Adams
Class: Freshman
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 220 pounds
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
High school: Sierra Canyon
Adams was a five-star recruit who originally committed to the Hubert Davis regime. Even though the program would undergo a coaching change, Adams didn't stop wanting to be a Tar Heel; he essentially re-committed to play for Michael Malone.
Now, he gets to help establish what this new era of Carolina basketball looks like.
What Maximo Adams brings to UNC
Versatility is the starting point.
When UNC announced his signing, the program highlighted Adams’ ability to score in different ways, rebound, and defend multiple positions. That combination gives him several avenues to contribute, even when the offense isn’t running through him.
Against USC, Adams knocked down two of his four three-point attempts and grabbed three offensive rebounds. That’s an appealing combination for a bench player: someone who can stretch the defense while also creating another possession when a teammate’s shot doesn’t fall.
If those contributions become consistent, Malone will have a reason to call his number in different situations.
The biggest question surrounding Maximo Adams
Can Adams become someone Malone trusts when the game gets tight?
Providing an offensive spark is a good introduction. Staying in the rotation requires dependable defensive possessions, sound decisions, and contributions when the shots aren’t falling.
Sometimes, it isn't always easy for freshmen as they adjust to the college game.
However, the encouraging part is that Adams has already shown he can influence a game in multiple ways. The next step is proving that his energy and production can hold up as opponents adjust and the competition becomes less forgiving.
What does a successful season look like for Maximo Adams?
A successful freshman season would make Adams a dependable part of UNC’s rotation and ultimately having him challenge for a spot among the starting lineup.
He doesn't need to chase a particular scoring average. He needs to provide meaningful minutes in whatever role he's asked to fill, doing a little bit of everything we saw him do against the Trojans. If he can rebound the basketball at a high level and provide reliable defense, Adams will play a lot for the Tar Heels this season.
There should also be room for his responsibilities to grow. If Adams earns greater trust as the season progresses, UNC could enter its most important stretch with another player capable of changing a game.
The bottom line
Adams has already given UNC fans something worth watching. Now comes the harder part: making that first impression a regular occurrence.
Being a five-star recruit isn't always easy. The expectations are sky-high from the minute you arrive on campus, and, especially at a Blue Blood school like North Carolina, all eyes are on you.
However, Adams has proven that he's ready for the challenges ahead, and North Carolina needs him to be the guy that they fell in love with on the recruiting trail.
Let's face it: the Tar Heels will need production beyond their starters. If Adams can deliver consistently, his freshman season could become less about earning minutes and more about ensuring Malone keeps giving him minutes.
