Mark Pope enters the race for UNC’s top in-state target, but fans should not worry

With Mark Pope's future at Kentucky very much in question, Tar Heel fans shouldn't be too concerned just yet.

North Carolina has been involved in the Jordan Page sweepstakes for quite some time.

While Hubert Davis was the one to extend the initial offer, there's no reason why Michael Malone and the new-look staff won't be interested as well for one of the top players in the Class of 2027.

Of course, Page has a long line of other suitors, as a fellow Blue Blood has jumped into the equation.

Mark Pope and Kentucky extend an offer to Jordan Page

Pope and the Wildcats have extended an offer to Page in hopes of adding him to their future backcourt. While an offer from Kentucky in the past might have scared Tar Heel fans a bit, there shouldn't be concern just yet given the circumstances surrounding what's going on with the Wildcats.

After an abysmal season from a highly-overpaid roster, Pope's job security is not great at this point. If Kentucky has another season like the one they just experienced, the Wildcats will be in the same predicament that the Tar Heels were in this past season.

The two situations are eerily similar, except UNC pivoted to another coach this offseason. Neither Pope or Hubert Davis (other than his run to the national championship game in 2022), have lived up to the lofty expectations of their respective fanbases, as Kentucky could be the next Blue Blood to be searching for a new head coach around this time in 2027.

Sure, Kentucky could offer Page a boatload of NIL money to get him to Lexington, but would he want to commit to a program that could very well be looking for a new head coach before he steps foot on campus?

Logistically speaking, North Carolina (if the interest is retained by the current staff) could have an upper hand, especially given that Malone had a ton of success at the NBA level. His presence could lure a player like Page (who could be a potential one-and-done talent), given that he knows what it takes to not only make it in the pros, but how to be successful upon getting there.
