Maria Gakdeng joins the 1,000-point scorers club

The senior center made individual history as she helped the UNC women's basketball program defeat No. 14-ranked Kentucky

It's time to officially welcome Maria Gakdeng to the 1,000-point scorers club.

In the second quarter of the UNC women's basketball program's victory over No. 14-ranked Kentucky, Gakdeng scored her 1,000th career point. As she so often has done during her time in Chapel Hill, Gakdeng's historic basketball came following an offensive rebound, a basket that helped extend the Tar Heels' lead.

The current UNC women's basketball team has a handful of true bucket-getters. While some programs are fortunate to have one 1,000-point scorer on their roster, the Tar Heels currently have four:

Lexi Donarski
Maria Gakdeng
Grace Townsend (achieved at Richmond)
Alyssa Ustby

Gakdeng has been a tremendous addition for the UNC women's basketball program. Once she entered her name in the transfer portal, Courtney Banghart and her staff wasted no time recruiting her to Chapel Hill, a decision that continues to pay dividends for the program as a whole.

Maria Gakdeng will look to add more points to her name as the UNC Women's Basketball program hosts Coppin State for a Sunday afternoon clash.
