The UNC women's basketball program closed out 2024 with a bang!

Behind stellar performances from Maria Gakdeng and Alyssa Ustby, the UNC women's basketball program defeated Miami on Sunday afternoon. The win marks the first time that the Tar Heels have won a game in Coral Gables since 2015.

It's been a long time coming!

North Carolina was in control throughout, leading by as much as 17 in the first half. The Hurricanes simply had no answer for the Tar Heels' front court depth, an area that Courtney Banghart's team took full advantage of.

Gakdeng finished with a double-double, leading all scorers with 21 points while hauling in 12 rebounds. Her presence in the post made it difficult for Miami to get their shots near the basket, as the length that the Tar Heels feature was stifling for Miami's offensive attack.

Fellow front court mate Alyssa Ustby also had a strong outing, as she also put together a double-double outing. It was a typical Alyssa Ustby type performance, as the fifth-year graduate forward finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block.

Leading up to this game, it was certain that the Tar Heels front court would have to be on their "A Game" to win this contest. It's safe to say that they were more than ready for the challenge.

Heading into the New Year with a 13-2 record, the first game of 2025 is a big one for the UNC women's basketball program. On Sunday, the Tar Heels will host Olivia Miles, Hannah Hidalgo and the No. 3-ranked Norte Dame Fighting Irish in a big-time ACC clash in Chapel Hill.
