Along with adding size this offseason, the UNC basketball program needed to find its point guard of the future as well.
The guy tabbed to fill the void is Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans, a player who just might be the most important transfer that the Tar Heels brought in this offseason.
Evans might not fit the bill as a "true point guard," but he certainly has the skills it takes to add his own twist to the position. In fact, he might just be the closest player we've seen at the position since a very popular former Tar Heel graced the roster a few years back.
Prior to North Carolina
Evans played his first two college seasons at Colorado State, developing into a full-time starter during the 2024-2025 season.
In 72 games at Colorado State, Evans totaled 441 points, 79 three-pointers, 139 assists and 39 steals. He showed off his ability to shoot the basketball, making multiple three-pointers on 22 occasions, including three or more 13 separate times.
What to Expect in 2025-2026
Some have questions whether his game will translate (having come from Colorado State). However, Evans proved all last year that he's more than ready for the spotlight, as his biggest games came when the stakes were at its highest.
This is the same dude who drained a school-record six three-pointers vs. Memphis in last year's NCAA Tournament. He will be more than ready for what's ahead of him in his first season as a Tar Heel.
What Tar Heel fans can expect is this: Evans is going to bring offensive firepower to the point guard position.
While scoring was an issue for the Tar Heels at this spot over the last two seasons, Evans should have no trouble scoring the basketball, especially with a team full of size and floor spacers around him. Don't be stunned if Evans averages double-figures and shoots the basketball at a high level, as he's more than capable of doing that while finding open opportunities for his teammates to capitalize on.
Bold Prediction
Kyan Evans will quickly rise as a fan-favorite in Chapel Hill, as fans will fall in love with his style of play.
We mentioned it earlier, but... Evans might just be the closest player to resemble Coby White in terms of play style. Things ended up working out pretty good for White in his lone season in Chapel Hill, as Evans might just follow his path of a short stint at North Carolina based on his on-court success.
