If that was the last time Jason DeCaro toes the rubber in front of the home crowd at Boshamer Stadium, he certainly put together a performance that Tar Heel will talk about for quite some time!
DeCaro made the most of every single pitch he threw on Saturday afternoon, pitching a complete game shutout to guide the Tar Heels to a win in Game 2 of the Super Regionals.
Jason DeCaro puts together a historic performance on the mound
The junior right-hander, who is expected to be selected in this year's MLB Draft, didn't want his final start on his home field to be the last time he'd be able to wear the Carolina uniform. Efficient, effective and flat-out dominant, DeCaro made life extremely difficult for the Trojans lineup, completely silencing them throughout the entire game.
In fact, USC didn't even have a runner reach second base!
DeCaro worked ahead all day long, putting together 14 (yes, 14!) 0-2 counts. When you're that effective around the zone, it makes it even more difficult to hit, which USC learned the hard way as they simply couldn't get to the Tar Heels' ace.
The ESPN broadcast showed Caden Glauber making his way to the bullpen ahead of the start of the fourth inning, which was interesting considering how effective DeCaro was. However, even though the ACC Freshman of the Year warmed up, Scott Forbes never had to turn to him, as DeCaro was determined to finish this thing out for his team.
On a hot, steamy day at Boshamer Stadium, DeCaro was on fire in his own right, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3 on Sunday afternoon with a trip to the Super Regionals on the line.

When you think back in UNC baseball history, DeCaro's gritty performance is one that will rank among one of the best we've ever witnessed. Not only is it his best start of his career, but is the one that fans will point to years from now when he's pitching at the big league level.
The conversation will likely be something like this: "Remember when Jason DeCaro tossed a dominant complete game shutout to keep UNC's season alive in 2026?"
There's no doubt we'll all remember it fondly, especially if the Tar Heels find a way to clinch a ticket to Omaha on Sunday afternoon.
For all he's done for the UNC baseball program, DeCaro rightfully deserved that type of moment in front of the home crowd. While that's one way to pitch in the final home start of your career, the hope is that he has the opportunity to take the mound at least one more time in Omaha before he likely wraps up his college baseball career.
