It's not everyday where you can say that someone named Duke has interest in playing for North Carolina!
With the latest round of college basketball free agency underway, Michael Malone and the Tar Heels have been showing interest in some of the top big men who have recently become available. North Carolina would love to add an experienced center to its 2026-2027 roster, and Duke Brennan just might be the perfect fit.

On Monday, it was reported that Duke Brennan will explore a potential return to the college ranks for a fifth season, and the list of interested programs goes well beyond the 9 schools he said he'll focus on.

North Carolina is one of those schools, as the Tar Heels will be competing against the likes of Villanova (his current school), Oregon, USC, UConn, UCLA, Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Georgetown for his services.
Known as "Mr. Double-Double," Brennan was one of a handful of players last season to average double-digit scoring and rebounding outputs for the entire year. A third-team All-BIG East selection, Brennan averaged 12.4 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in his first season as a Wildcat, becoming the first Villanova player to average double-digit rebounding numbers in a season since Harold Pressley accomplished the feat during the 1985-1986 campaign.
Oh yeah, and don't forget that Brennan also connected on nearly 66% of his shots from the field, another impressive stat for the big man.
It makes absolute sense why a guy like Brennan would interest the Tar Heels. For starters, North Carolina would love to add a bruiser-type big who can get in the post and do the dirty work. With rebounding being an emphasis, and a roster that is currently very lean, Brennan's size (6-foot-10, 250 pounds) is exactly what the UNC basketball program needs.
Also, it doesn't hurt at all to add some experience, given that guys like Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov have never played in a college basketball game.

If you look at the current trend, all the fifth-year players that Michael Malone and his staff are actively pursuing share the same characteristics. Of course, experience intrigues UNC, given that any addition at this position would have a proven track record, but they are also focused heavily on adding size to complement what they already brought in this offseason. Guys like Brennan and Micah Handlogten make a ton of sense, as the hope is that one of them will fill UNC's final roster spot ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
Malone and the Tar Heels are actively working in the free-agent market, which is absolutely crazy to even think about. Even with the NCAA battling the eligibility ruling for this graduating class, UNC is wise to think ahead, hoping to earn a commitment from one of the bigs they covet as they look to finalize a roster they believe can be strong competitors in Malone's first season at the helm.
