Never bet against a man who has something to prove.
Isaiah Denis appears well-motivated as he enters his second season with the UNC basketball program. He offered an early glimpse of what he could bring to the Tar Heels this season during North Carolina's exhibition action, scoring 14 points in a win over USC, but his postgame comments may have been even more noteworthy than his on-court play.
This isn't simply another season for the sophomore guard. It's personal.
“This is definitely personal for me,” Denis said. “I feel like I could've showed a lot last year, and I wasn't able to do that.”
Denis is ready to show what Hubert Davis missed out on last season
You can't blame Denis for feeling the way he does.
Opportunities were scarce during his freshman season, leaving the talented guard little chance to showcase everything he believed he could bring to the Tar Heels. Even though he missed time during the preseason due to injury, Hubert Davis never gave Denis a shot to prove his worth, basically keeping the talented guard on the bench.
Now, there's a clean slate in Chapel Hill.
With Michael Malone taking over the program, every player on the roster has a chance to establish himself in a new system. For someone like Denis, that's especially important.
He's no longer simply trying to find his footing as a freshman. He's had a year to adjust to the college game, learn from his experiences, and, perhaps most importantly, remember what it felt like to want an opportunity that didn't always come.
That can be one heck of a motivator.
Let's face it: Denis could've easily transferred this offseason, given all the changes at Chapel Hill. However, Denis decided he has unfinished business at North Carolina, and now has a coaching staff behind him that believes in him.
Isaiah Denis told #UNC coach Michael Malone “thank you for taking a chance on me” after the game, to which Malone responded: “No, thank you for taking a chance on me.”

There's a difference between saying you have something to prove and playing like it. Denis now has an entire season to turn that frustration into production and show why he believed he could do more all along.
One exhibition performance won't determine what his role ultimately looks like. Malone is still learning his roster, experimenting with combinations, and figuring out which players he can trust as the games start to count.
But Denis has made his mindset abundantly clear: he wanted the chance to show more last season. That opportunity he craves is in front of him, and he's determined not to let it pass him by.
Sometimes, the most dangerous player on the court is the one who believes he still has something left to prove. Denis is on a mission, and Friday night was just the start of his season-long redemption tour.
