Asim Richards is an athletic talent, making a name for himself as an offensive lineman.
After thriving at offensive tackle for the UNC football program, Richards made his way to the pros, earning an opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys. While he's certainly competing for playing time on the Cowboys offensive line, there may just be another option to get him snaps.
How does Asim Richards the tight end sound to you?!
New head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted that Richards is getting looks at tight end, most notably in "jumbo" packages. This is an experiment to see if Richards can help beef up the Cowboys' blocking in goal line and short-yardage situations.
"We’ve got jumbo tight ends we’re training. You look at Asim Richards. He’s not playing just tackle. He’s playing tight end."
Training camp is all about seeing what you're team is capable of. There's no better time to experiment with some new ideas/concepts that might just end up working out.
Before you think that Richards is going to be a highly-used pass catcher, think again. It's not likely that any of the Cowboys' drawn-up offensive plays are intended on getting the ball in his hands, as the creativity behind it is to essentially help provide additional blocking in the running game.
If Dallas is going to use Richards in these type of situations this season, we just have one question to ask: can ya'll at LEAST find a way to throw a pass to him in the endzone?!
