Is the UNC search to replace Hubert Davis going to end soon?
That's what everyone is hoping for, as Tommy Lloyd and Billy Donovan seem to be the two candidates who are standing out the most, though a surprise move can't be ruled out either. Regardless of that, the Tar Heels need to act fast, as their 2026 commits have a tough decision to make.
A pair of NBA legends push for UNC to keep it in the family with next hire
In particular, countless eyes are on 5-star playmakers Dylan Mingo and Maximo Adams. Both have been radio silent in terms of a reaction to the Hubert Davis firing. However, as recruiting insiders have pointed out, the longer UNC waits to make a decision, the more likely it is that both Mingo and Adams could have a change of heart:

Is the role Hubert Davis promised the 5⭐️ guard the same Lloyd/Donovan/May will offer?

UNC must do whatever it takes to keep Dylan Mingo and Maximo Adams on board
Even the thought of Mingo and Adams deciding to open up their recruitment is beyond stressful. With Mingo, he was a late addition to the 2026 class, with the Tar Heels beating out Washington, Baylor and Penn State for his verbal pledge.
With the uncertainty in Chapel Hill right now, it's understandable if Mingo is thinking about whether or not he wants to be a Tar Heel in the future. It doesn't help that the combo guard had a great relationship with UNC great Marcus Paige, who is now off to Charlotte to join Wes Miller's staff.
Adam signed with the Tar Heels already, but due to the coaching change, he's free to look elsewhere too if he wants to. He suffered an ankle injury in his team's state title win earlier this winter, but that didn't stop him from enjoying things over at the McDonald's All-American Game.
Both Adams and Mingo, along with fellow '26 pledge Malloy Smith, are expected to play massive roles in the Tar Heels getting back to a level of play everyone is used to. However, it's far from a lock that they'll be playing in the ACC next season, which is not good at all. Landing either Lloyd or Donovan could change things in a major way there, though.
