This was some breaking news that plenty of North Carolina fans weren't quite ready for, but it turns out UNC and Michael Malone had a feeling it was coming. In case you just missed it, Florida Atlantic transfer Maxim Logue will no longer be making the move to Chapel Hill.

Originally, the 6-9 big man committed to North Carolina on April 21. While Logue wasn't expected to be a starter, the hope was that he would come off the bench and give Malone some valuable minutes. However, per 247Sports' Andrew Jones on the Heel Report Podcast, Logue ran into some academic hurdles.

Per Jones, North Carolina did its best to see if he could get admitted to the school, but once the writing was on the wall, the Tar Heels and Logue were forced to part ways. That's unfortunate news, as Logue no question was ready to make a bit of a difference in the ACC next year.

Veteran big man Maxim Logue will no longer play for UNC next season

Again, Logue was not expected to be a head-turning playmaker for the Heels next season, but his 6-9, 215-pound size was going to make an impact near the glass for Carolina. Logue started off his career at Oregon State before making the move to Florida Atlantic for this past campaign.

In 2025-26, Logue averaged 4.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. During his one season in Corvallis with the Beavers, the big man averaged 2.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest. Now, he'll have to look for a new place to call home.

While this is a small setback for North Carolina, not all news is bad there. UNC and Malone just reeled in the pledge of 5-star center Sayon Keita, who is, for now, expected to be the starter next campaign. On top of that, depth was added with Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman also giving the staff his pledge.

With Logue no longer ACC-bound, that means a roster spot is open and there's surely still a need for more bigs to make their way to town. Brice Dessert is a new name that fans are going to want to keep an eye on, while overseas standout Mouhamed Faye is another target for Malone and his staff.
