"We’re going to have to respond and fight back."
It feels like we hear this quote from Hubert Davis way too often.
Following his team's loss to Cal, another game in which the UNC basketball program was horrible defensively, Davis repeated the same forms of answers we've continuously heard from him. It took about 25 minutes of game time for the Tar Heels to find any sense of urgency, which was way too late to finish the comeback effort.
While Tar Heel fans are absolutely concerned with this team, and are even more doubtful that Davis is actually the guy to lead this program moving forward, the current head coach doesn't really seem fazed by what has transpired, as his message is to simply continue to work on the areas of concern.
“Continue to repeat it, continue to drill it, continue to coach it, and continue to hold guys accountable towards it. And also, throughout the year, everybody goes through some bumps, whether it’s at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, you hope it’s not at the end of the year, and you have to find a way to work through it. And so these are some bumps that we went through this week and three of the last four games, and we’re going to have to respond and fight back. We have an opportunity to do this. I love these kids. Got an unbelievable, great team to coach. I love being around them, and we’ll figure it out.”
Repeat quotes
We all know how much Hubert Davis loves this team and how proud he is of them. How do we know? Well, he's told us about 50 times already this season (almost as many threes as the last four ACC opponents have drained against the Tar Heels.
While we all love how Hubert Davis is with his team and how he firmly understands the ins and outs of the UNC basketball program, at what point are we going to hear him say something different? Obviously, every team has its fair share of ups and downs, but for a program that should be vying for a national title essentially every year, it's unacceptable that this group has played so poorly in the early portion of conference play.
At what point are we going to change what we're doing on the court (and also what is said to the media).
Everything recently seems like déjà vu for this program, and it's not the good kind that leads to victories against teams the Tar Heels should be beating.
