Seth Trimble didn't need a career night to show Hubert Davis how important he is to the UNC basketball program.
Of course, Davis won't complain if Trimble puts together more performances like he did on Monday night before his time in Chapel Hill comes to a close.
Trimble scored a career-high 30 points, playing an integral role in the Tar Heels' victory over No. 24-ranked Louisville. Not only was he outstanding offensively, he also had the task of guarding Mikel Brown Jr., and did a great job of making the future NBA Draft lottery pick work for every bucket he got.
It took him 25 shots to score 24 points. North Carolina will take that!
Davis discusses Trimble's career night
After the game, Hubert Davis was asked about Trimble's outing, The Tar Heels head coach raved about the performance his captain put together.
"Seth was huge for us tonight on both ends of the floor. He had the responsibility of guarding Brown, and what a responsibility that is. He's a fantastic player. And against their defense, they're long, athletic, and very versatile. You have to find ways to break down their defense and consistently score.
Seth was our guy coming off ball screens. The thing that I loved about him was that he was thinking attack. He wasn't coming off looking to pass. One of the things that I've told him is, when you come off of a ball screen, you're a hundred percent thinking to score, and then let the defense dictate whether you make a pass or you go to the basket and assess your ability to be able to get downhill.
He was able to score and draw fouls. Just a huge difference maker for us against a really good defensive team."
'It just work without Seth'
After a sluggish first half against Syracuse, Trimble has turned it up a notch over the last three halves he's played.
Davis noted that there was a discussion during halftime on Saturday afternoon with his senior guard, as he seemed to need a friendly reminder of how important he is to this UNC team.
"We talked at halftime against Syracuse, and I was like, it just doesn't work without you, Seth. And it's not just from an offensive standpoint. He can impact winning in so many different ways. I just challenged him to do it, and to do it consistently.
He really stepped up in the second half against Syracuse. And then again for us tonight, he makes so many plays, not just scoring, defense, deflections, steals, box outs, rebounds, obviously he had a career high (points), but I'm just really happy for Seth. He played extremely well."
Trimble got his head coach's message loud and clear, and has been playing like the player we all know he truly can be. There's no doubt that this Tar Heels team is a much better squad when Trimble is at the top of his game on both ends of the floor, finding opportunities to drive to the basket offensively while locking down opposing team's top scoring threat on the other end.
With a few games remaining in the regular season, as well as only two more home games for the senior guard, it's safe to say Trimble won't need a reminder of what his team needs from him down the stretch.
He'll be ready to keep producing at a very high level.
