These are the toughest times for everyone involved in North Carolina basketball. It's not working. The proof is in the results. The Tar Heels standard remains the standard, but it's not being met. Changes have to be made, and it's probably going to mean the end of Hubert Davis' tenure as head coach.
Bubba Cunningham breaks his silence on Hubert Davis and leaves UNC fans guessing
Davis' history as a Tar Heel shouldn't make him exempt from criticism or being fired. It happened to Matt Doherty and despite major personality clashes with players and accusations of academic improprieties, he was allowed to resign. That's how Carolina treated arguably the worst coach the program had in at least 75 years — with respect. Davis should, and will, be extended the same grace.
A decision on Hubert Davis’ future as UNC head coach is expected in the coming days, per @PeteThamel.

UNC fans can't forget the impact Hubert Davis has made on the program
The results haven't been pretty and blowing a huge lead to VCU in the first round was unacceptable. Davis has to swallow those disappointments. But, he has run a great program with the same dignity and honor as his mentors — Dean Smith and Roy Williams. There's no question he cares about the well-being of North Carolina basketball. He cares about the players that have come through the program. His staff is made up of ex-players that share his love of being a Tar Heel.
Davis' expected ouster would likely mean the end of the job being shared within the Carolina family too. He played for the Tar Heels from 1988-92 under Smith and was a long-time assistant for Williams before taking over in 2021. Davis looks at his struggles as a coach from a bigger picture than himself -- he doesn't want to let the family down and he doesn't want the program to be looked at in a negative manner.
Hopefully, the fanbase will appreciate Davis for what he has tried to do. He has tried to run an honorable program at a time when honor has become the last thing most people think about. If North Carolina goes after a big name outside the Smith/Williams tree as expected, it's likely going to shake up the foundation. Maybe it's time for that to happen. However, if this is the end for Davis, do the right thing and give the man his flowers on the way out. He has represented everything that the Tar Heels want to stand for.Â
