On Tuesday, Michael Malone’s trip to Barcelona yielded a commitment from 18-year-old seven-footer Sayon Keita. The Malian big man played just six minutes a game for FC Barcelona last year, but has spent two seasons with the professional team.Â
Originally a 2027 recruit, Keita is expected to reclassify and join the Tar Heels next season. He has been on UNC’s radar since he took a visit to Chapel Hill last August, when Hubert Davis was still at the helm, and now, with Henri Veesaar leaving for the NBA, Malone has closed the deal.
However, while the name may be familiar to Tar Heels fans, the game likely isn’t. So, for those of you who aren’t grinding Euroleague tape and seeking out developmental prospects overseas, here’s a little sampling of what Keita will provide as UNC’s likely starting center next season.Â

Only player 6 mpg for Barca over the last 2 years but tons of long term developmental upside. Super lanky, elite shot blocker & rim runner.

Sayon Keita is oozing with potential for Michael Malone to tap into
Keita is thin at 215 pounds. He’ll need to add weight to handle the physicality of college basketball, and because he needs to add strength, he’s probably a multi-year college player rather than a one-and-done, ready to jump to the NBA. Still, he may have an NBA future because there aren’t many seven-footers in the world who can move like he does, especially not as teenagers.Â
Keita is a smooth athlete who understands how to use his length on both ends of the floor, presenting a big target as a rim-runner and disrupting shots as a defensive anchor. Early in his career, UNC simply needs to ask him to dunk everything and block everything, and he’ll make a huge impact right away.Â
While much of his offensive game is limited to the dunker spot or catching lobs off the pick-and-roll, his highlight tape reveals glimpses of advanced footwork in the post and flashes of ball-handling in the open floor. He’s so obviously oozing with potential, and Malone is taking a bet that he can bring it out in Chapel Hill.Â
Keita will need to play right away for the Tar Heels. With the Transfer Portal mostly dried up, Malone’s other center pickup is Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman, who redshirted last season and who is even lighter than Keita. There will likely be some growing pains through the transition to college basketball, but if Keita hits his ceiling, they’ll be worth it because his upside is off the charts.
