Grace Townsend looks to be an impact transfer for the UNC women's basketball program
It was widely known that Courtney Banghart and the UNC women's basketball program were in the market for two guards via the transfer portal, as they got a duo that should make an immediate impact for this year's club.
One of the transfers is Grace Townsend, a battle-tested guard who comes to North Carolina with plenty of collegiate experience under her belt. Not only was she impressive individually but played a large role in Richmond's success, leading the program to their first Atlantic-10 championship.
While she doesn't have much eligibility left, Townsend looks to make the most of her time in Chapel Hill. The hope is that it won't take long for her to transition to her new home.
2023-2024 Season In Review
During her senior season at Richmond, Townsend led the Spiders in assists and steals and ranked second on the team in scoring. Richmond posted a 29-6 record overall as the team went 29-6 overall, and Townsend earned A10 All-Conference, All-Tournament, and All-Academic honors.
A three-year starter, Townsend played in 118 games during her Richmond career, averaging 10.5 points and 4.7 assists per game.
What to Expect in 2024-2025
It's safe to say that Townsend is a very important part of the UNC women's basketball program's plan leading up to the 2024-2025 season.
While it's unclear whether or not she will start, expect Townsend to play heavy minutes in the backcourt, as her scoring and passing ability are two traits that make her a valuable asset on the floor.
We saw how depleted the Tar Heels' backcourt was a season ago due to injuries, but it appears that now the program has replenished the depth. Townsend, along with fellow transfer Trayanna Crisp, look to get involved right away in helping this team win some ball games.
Bold Prediction
Townsend will be the team's leader in assists.
It doesn't matter if she starts or not, Townsend has shown the knack for finding the open shooter, as that won't change this season. With plenty of talent around her, expect Townsend to pass the rock around, helping provide a steady flow to the offense that has been lacking a bit over the last few seasons.
