Original story

Starting quarterback Gio Lopez went down with a gruesome looking leg injury in the third quarter of the UNC football program's regular season finale against NC State.

Looking to throw the football, Lopez got the throw off but was hit after the ball was out, as an NC State defensive player rolled over his leg. Lopez immediately grabbed for the injured leg, as you can tell he was in a significant amount of pain.

Lopez was helped off the field and was immediately carried to the locker room. He was able to take small hops with his right foot, but no pressure was being applied to his left leg.

In case you missed the play, here's a closer look, one that shows the late, unnecessary hit made by No. 44 of NC State.

Before leaving the game, Lopez completed 11 of 16 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Max Johnson came in to relieve Lopez following the injury.

We will continue to provide updates on Gio Lopez's injury as more information comes along.
