The Tar Heels' defensive line room has reportedly lost one of its young pieces.

Freshman defensive lineman Viliami Moala is no longer with the UNC football program, according to Inside Carolina reporter Spencer Haskell.

Moala had yet to appear in a game for the Tar Heels during his freshman season and had been listed as "out" on each of North Carolina's ACC availability reports.

While Moala never made his official debut for the Tar Heels, he was a notable addition to Bill Belichick's first full recruiting class at North Carolina.

The 6-foot-2, 360-pound defensive lineman committed to UNC in August 2025 after previously pledging to Oregon. That wasn't Moala's first change of commitment, either, as he was originally committed to USC before flipping to Oregon.

Now, it seems like Moala is going to be changing teams once again.

Moala was rated as the No. 526 overall prospect and No. 56 defensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

During his senior season at Thompson, Moala recorded 66 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, two sacks, and seven quarterback hurries. He was one of seven defensive linemen UNC added via this high school recruiting class.

Moala was seen working with the fourth-team defense during portions of media-open training camp and suited up for North Carolina's season-opening victory over TCU in Dublin. However, he never appeared this season for the Tar Heels, consistently listed as "out" on the weekly availability reports.

At this point, no reason for his departure has been publicly reported.

For a player expected to provide serious size in the middle of UNC's defensive line as he developed, his reported departure removes another young piece from the equation for Belichick and the Tar Heels moving forward. While we wait to see if more information comes along, this could be a case of a player unhappy with his role who will look for an opportunity elsewhere.
