Former Tar Heel Cedric Gray suffers an off-the-field injury days before Titans season opener

After a fantastic season in 2025, former Tar Heel Cedric Gray put himself on the map as one of the rising defensive stars that the sport of football has to offer.

Unfortunately, just days ahead of the start of the 2026 season, Gray's availability has become a major question following an off-the-field injury.

Cedric Gray placed in concussion protocol following UTV crash

The Tennessee Titans announced that Gray has been placed in concussion protocol just days before their season opener against the New York Jets. The injury was not suffered on the field, but is a product of a concussion (and other minor injuries) that occurred in a UTV accident over the weekend.

Reports have indicated that neither alcohol nor reckless driving were involved in the accident.

Here is the official statement from the Titans regarding the incident:

“Over the weekend, Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident in Tennessee and sustained a concussion and minor injuries. We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol.”

Gray was outstanding during the 2025 season, leading the Titans with 160 total tackles. That mark was also the fifth-most tackles recorded by any player in the NFL, leading all players in their first or second seasons as a pro.

While in Chapel Hill, Gray displayed a knack for finding the football and making tackles, and that trait has followed him to the pros.

First and foremost, thankfully it appears that Gray's injuries from the crash were minor (other than the concussion he suffered). That, by far, is the most important aspect, as Gray is fortunate that the injuries weren't more severe in nature.

However, you have to ask the question: why was he driving a UTV (which stands for utility terrain vehicle), one that is designed for off-road and rugged areas, especially so close to the start of the new season.

Now, it looks like an off-the-field injury is going to sideline Gray from starting the 2026 season with his team, a major blow to Robert Saleh's linebacker core ahead of his head coaching debut with the franchise.

Let's hope that this doesn't sideline Gray for long, hopefully allowing him to return to a full bill of health in the very near future. The main thing here is that he's okay, but you have to wonder if this incident will cause ramifications (especially if his contract contains verbiage that indicates the player could face disciplinary action if they violate certain terms).

For now, we'll all be waiting patiently to see how Gray progresses in concussion protocol, but his odds of suiting up on Sunday afternoon in Nashville took a significant hit.
