On Monday, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced its regular season honorees for the 2024 field hockey season.
After leading the UNC Field Hockey team to an undefeated regular season, Erin Matson has been named the ACC Coach of the Year.
After wrapping up her historic collegiate career as a player, Matson stepped right into the world of coaching, replacing the legendary Karen Shelton as the head coach of the UNC Field Hockey program. She wasted no time adjusting to coaching, becoming the second youngest Division I head coach to win a national championship.
Oh yeah, that title came in her first season on the job!
Now in her second season at the helm, Matson has put together an incredible start to her coaching career. Leading into postseason play, the Tar Heels are 33-3 in Matson's early tenure with two ACC titles and a national title to show for it.
Matson can now add "2024 ACC Coach of the Year" to the legacy that she continues to build.
It's incredible what Matson has been able to accomplish. While her legacy as a player is cemented, Matson seems to be on the verge of greatness as a coach as well, making her even more of a historical figure in the field hockey world.
And to think she's only 24-years-old!
