Prior to Friday night, Hubert Davis hadn't had any previous success against the Kansas Jayhawks, dating back to his time as a player at North Carolina.
During his junior season in 1991, Davis and the Tar Heels suffered a loss to the Jayhawks. His first season as an assistant under Roy Williams, the 2012-2013 season, ended with a second round loss to Kansas in the NCAA Tournament.
Not that we need a reminder of this one, but Kansas also got the better of North Carolina in Davis' first season as the program's head coach, a devastating loss in the national championship game (one in which the Tar Heels squandered a 15-point halftime lead.
Friday helped change the narrative for Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program in several ways. For Davis, the win is a big one, but as always, he's always thinking about the experience that his team is gaining by winning a game of this magnitude, especially in front of the home crowd at the Dean Smith Center.
"I wanted this new team, this new group, to have evidence of what it's like to play in a game like this at the Smith Center and come up big," Davis said while speaking to the media following the win.
Hubert Davis bleeds Carolina Blue. From a player to an assistant coach to now the head coach, Davis has had his fair share of memorable experiences as a Tar Heel, and now is taking on the responsibility of helping guide his team to making special memories of their own.
While the game (especially the second half) provided some highlights that won't be forgotten anytime soon, it's not the final stats or the top plays that Davis will remember the most when he looks back on this victory.
"I won't remember the score, but I'll remember the smiles on their faces and them jumping around in the locker room."
