Early Trends and Observations through the first 3 games of the 2024-2025 season
Relax... RJ Davis is going to be FINE!
Coming off a historic season, the expectations for RJ Davis' final season with the UNC basketball program are sky-high.
In fact, the expectations are nearly impossible to reach.
When you look at a box score, everyone expects Davis to lead the Tar Heels in scoring. They expect him to shoot at a high level and believe he has to replicate (if not improve) upon his stat line from a season ago in order for the UNC basketball program to make a deep postseason run this season.
That is NOT the case!
While Davis has struggled early on this season, it's not time to panic: the fifth-year guard will be okay. Let's remember: players go through slumps, it's a part of sports that happens to every athlete, even the great ones.
Based on his UNC basketball career, you can expect Davis to get going shooting the basketball soon. By the end of the season, his field goal percentage will be around the 42-43% mark while he'll knock down 36-39% of his three-point attempts and drain close to 90% of his free-throw shots.
What fans need to realize is this: the Tar Heels don't need RJ Davis to be Superman every single night.
North Carolina has ample talent on the floor to split the scoring load. Elliot Cadeau and Seth Trimble have taken tremendous leaps to help the Tar Heels put points on the board. While the focus is on Davis, his head coach, Hubert Davis, will call upon him to be more of a playmaker, making the right read on plays either to set himself up to score or to find an open teammate.
It's only a matter of time before RJ Davis gets himself into a groove. As we wait for that moment, RELAX, we're only three games in!
