Recruiting players from the transfer portal can be very tricky.
For starters, you don't necessarily know how a given player would fit in your program, both culture and scheme-wise. While the talent could've been well on display elsewhere, there's no guarantee it will translate at another stop.
That's why coaches across the country use their resources to dig deeper into potential transfer portal recruiting targets. In the case of Dusty May, he relied on a UNC legend to give him the inside knowledge on Elliot Cadeau.
After winning the national championship on Monday night, May confirmed that his resource was the deciding factor in bringing Cadeau to Ann Arbor.

“I just said, let me ask you one question: Would 17-18 year-old Sean May want to play with Elliot Cadeau? And he said, ‘expletive yeah!’ And I said, that’s all I needed to know.” pic.twitter.com/ZfaBnAMZY9
Having the opportunity to coach Sean May on the AAU circuit, Dusty May went to his old friend for advice on Elliot Cadeau.
The Michigan head coach had one question to ask, one that Sean May answered perfectly.
“I just said, let me ask you one question: Would 17-18 year-old Sean May want to play with Elliot Cadeau? And he said, ‘expletive yeah!’ And I said, that’s all I needed to know.”
Sean May had the opportunity to coach Cadeau for two seasons in Chapel Hill, having a front-row seat to witness what he can do on the basketball court. If there's anyone who would know if he would fit with a certain program, it's May, who undoubtedly told his former AAU coach that he would love to play alongside the former Tar Heel point guard.
Given his elite ability to pass the basketball, what big man wouldn't want to play with a point guard with that type of skillset?
As Michigan celebrates its national championship, Dusty May gave Sean May a signature "point to the passer" shoutout. The former Tar Heel helped pair his former point guard with a program that fit him perfectly, as the move ended up being a major success for both sides.
