Is the next North Carolina head coach set to work his magic in the Final Four?
That's what plenty of people believe to be the case, as Tommy Lloyd has Arizona one win away from the title game, while the exact same can be said for Michigan's Dusty May. Over the past week or so, there's been buzz that Lloyd is the favorite, though Billy Donovan and May keep getting brought up.
ChatGTP has a new 'best choice' to replace Hubert Davis and it's not a shocker
We haven't really heard from May on the subject, but he broke his silence in an interview with Jeff Goodman. May's response to the rumors shouldn't surprise anyone, as it was the textbook definition of 'coach speak' to try and disregard things:
ICYMI: Dusty May on the North Carolina coaching rumors

“I’m not going to comment on any job that’s not mine. I’m incredibly happy, honored, and blessed to be the coach of Michigan in the Final Four.”

Dusty May did he best to silence UNC rumors with Michigan headed to the Final Four
"I decided last year when my alma mater came open that no matter what you say, it could be misinterpreted," May told Goodman. "So, I'm forever going to not comment on any job that's not mine. I'm incredibly happy, honored and blessed to be the coach at Michigan in the Final Four, representing this amazing university and athletic department."
This sure sounds similar to what Lloyd has been saying right? It's interesting that May said he wouldn't comment on any other jobs. At the same time, this wasn't a definitive no at all, with some people even believing that he's leaving the door open to potentially make a move.
It's hard to say what's going to happen, as the hope is that things will get finalized with whoever replaces Davis once the season comes to an end. With that said, either Michigan or Arizona's season is going to end soon enough and that's only going to lead to more speculation arriving.
From our chair, it seems like May and Lloyd are no doubt top-tier candidates, with Donovan also being on that list. Michigan and Arizona know there's going to be pressure on the administration to do everything possible to keep their beloved coach in town.
While North Carolina has struggled in recent seasons, this is UNC we're talking about at the end of the day. With the right coach in place, the Tar Heels can get back to the style of play that helped bring so much joy to the fanbase. Will the next hire end up being May? That's a toss-up, but he's going to be someone to watch and keep a close eye on until a final call is made.
