Drake Maye is now two starts into his NFL career, and while the New England Patriots have lost both contests, it isn't because of their rookie quarterback's play.
Maye has been a much-needed boost to the Patriots offense, as the offense seems to gel better when the former UNC football star is leading the way. In what is a rebuilding year for New England, it's encouraging to see the early play from the No. 3 overall pick, as his first two outings overall put him among very elite company.
Only two quarterbacks have ever thrown for 500+ yards and 5+ touchdown passes over their first two NFL starts.
The first was Dan Marino, a 17-year NFL pro who went on to have a Hall of Fame career for the Miami Dolphins.
The other- Drake Maye.
Maye has completed 50 of his 78 passing attempts for 541 yards and five touchdowns. He has completed at least 60% of his passes in each of his first two starts, and has also done damage with his legs, rushing for an additional 68 yards.
While many doubted the former UNC football star heading into his rookie season, Drake Maye has quickly silenced the haters. Although it's still a very small sample size, Maye is proving that he is the next franchise quarterback for the Patriots as they look to get the franchise back in the right direction.
Even though much hasn't gone right for the Patriots this season, Maye's emergence has been one very positive bright spot as the organization builds towards the future.
