David Noel had no trouble becoming a fan favorite during his time with the UNC basketball program.
Even though he was undersized for a typical player of his position, Noel was as versatile as they come, bringing tenacious defense, high energy and most important, outstanding leadership to the table.
Of course, it's no surprise that he made a huge impact on the 2004-2005 team that won the national championship, and no one was stunned when his production took a massive leap during his true senior season in 2005-2006. All these factors combined led to him being a second round pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, a path that led to a long, successful professional career.
Now that his playing days are over, Noel has been one of the high-rising names in the coaching ranks. While he's been working in the NBA G-League since 2019, Noel is now set to return to the college ranks, reuniting with someone from his time in Chapel Hill in the process.

UNC Greensboro announced that Noel has been hired as an assistant coach, as he'll be working alongside head coach Jerod Haase, who served as an assistant coach at North Carolina from 2003 to 2012. The former Tar Heels will now cross paths once again, transitioning from their previous player-coach relationship to one in which both are coaching alongside each other.
Haase had a front-row seat to what Noel brought to the table throughout his college career, characteristics that have not only stuck with him but also made him out to be one heck of a coach. Hiring Noel as an assistant coach on his staff must've been a no-brainer for Haase, as he adds someone with a ton of experience (both as a player and as a coach) and strong leadership qualities to his staff.
Who better to help guide the current athletes who compete for UNC Greensboro's basketball team than a guy like Noel with a very proven track record?
When Michael Malone was hired at North Carolina, there was some chatter from the Tar Heel fan base about potentially bringing Noel home to Chapel Hill to join his staff. Unfortunately, that didn't work out the way we hoped it might, but this is a great landing spot for Noel as he continues his coaching career, taking on the opportunity to coach at the collegiate level.
Who knows, maybe down the road, David Noel will end up on the UNC basketball program's coaching staff.
