Courtney Banghart: this year's team "is much easier to score the ball"
The UNC women's basketball program had its fair share of offensive struggles a season ago, an issue that was very tough to solve. Without a consistent presence from beyond-the-arc, the Tar Heels became very heavily focused on feeding the post, as opposing teams didn't hesitate to try and tempt them to shoot from deep.
Of course, you have to also note the amount of injuries the Tar Heels dealt with, as most of the team's depth at the guard position missed time throughout the course of the season. Heading into the new season, head coach Courtney Banghart believes that this year's team has what it takes to get the offense back on track.
"Each group has its own vibe, and this group is much easier to score the ball. We've had a tough time scoring the past few years, and the ball stuck at times. We're now playing off of close-outs better, and we're playing off of space because the ball is moving better. Alyssa's (Ustby) ability to shoot has allowed us to now expand our range. Same thing with Ciera (Toomey). She is a great shooter as well. Lexi Donarski is doing more off the dribble.
Last year, because we were so injured, a lot was leaned on these guys, and they didn't perform as well as they wanted over the course of the last six weeks because of fatigue. They all got in the gym and got better.
The experienced pieces are better, but the offense will be very different. I think we'll still have a similar defensive toughness, but the offense will look very different. We don't -- I mean, I know you guys were hoping that by the time you're experienced, you know the offense, but it's totally different this year, so we have a bunch of new guys."
Now, before you start the unnecessary nonsense- THIS IS NOT A DIG AT DEJA KELLY! This is Banghart stating the facts about her current team.
This group, when healthy, features players who are more suited to move the ball and create space. Last year's team struggled to do that (especially when injuries started to surface), but Banghart believes this team has the pieces to be a more versatile team offensively.
The pieces seem to be in place, now we'll have to wait and see this group execute once the season begins. Needless to say, fans should be excited to see what the offensive attack looks like this season for the UNC women's basketball program.
