Dabo Swinney has quite the resume as a head football coach.
The winningest coach in ACC history, Swinney has 188 victories to his name, 15 more than College Football Hall of Famer Bobby Bowden recorded during his incredible tenure at Florida State. Swinney and the Clemson Tigers haven't just stacked up wins but won two national championships since he arrived on campus, producing postseason success that not many college football programs can claim.
One of the best in the business, Swinney is a humble individual who respects greatness. That was evident with his latest media session, one in which he raved about having the opportunity to coach against Bill Belichick.

Swinney doesn't take the opportunity to coach against Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach with the New England Patriots, lightly. Preparing for his second meeting with the legendary head coach, Swinney admitted that it still doesn't feel real that Belichick is
"It's an honor to coach against him, really," Swinney said. "Sometimes I still can't believe he's the coach at North Carolina, but he is, and we've gotta play him."
For someone with the resume that Swinney has at Clemson, it takes a special individual to have him in awe. Even though his success was at the NFL level, Belichick still has the respect of opposing coaches across the country, as his peers know just how good he is at coaching the sport of football at any given level.
"He (Belichick) gets attacked, gets criticized, all of that, but he just shows up and does his job." Swinney added. "He has a process he believes in, and I respect that."
Referring to his opportunity to coach against Belichick as a "bucket list" type of moment, Swinney acknowledged that he has spent time around the legendary head coach at ACC meetings. What he took from his encounters with Belichick is the importance of being who you are, something that could be tough, especially for coaches who are trying to navigate the challenges the current landscape of college athletics has to offer.
What Swinney had to say is a reminder of just how good Bill Belichick is at what he does. Sure, last season didn't go as planned for the Tar Heels in his first season at the helm, and there are still some media members who want to tear him down any chance they get. However, as Swinney noted, he just keeps showing up and doing his job, and the Tar Heels' 2-0 start to the 2026 college football season is a testament to the job he's done in getting UNC back on track.
After handing North Carolina a loss last season, Swinney hopes his team, one that has faced some struggles early on this season, can add another loss to Belichick's resume on Saturday. Based on how much respect he has for Belichick, another win against him would likely rank high among his favorite regular season victories that he ever accomplished as the head coach of the Clemson Tigers.
