The more time spent on Tommy Lloyd turning down UNC, the more depressing it is for Tar Heel fans. So, it's time to move on and deal with the matter at hand — the basketball program still needs a coach and there are a few candidates.
However, not every candidate is the right one. Bringing in a sequel to Matt Doherty is a risk that everyone needs to acknowledge. And that's why Bubba Cunningham really needs to avoid a few guys that would likely have the Tar Heels in this same position a couple of years later.
Here are three coaches UNC still needs to avoid:
"I have been told that Billy Donovan will not entertain a conversation with UNC until after the Chicago Bulls season is over...

I would expect names like Texas Tech's Grant McCasland, Vanderbilt's Mark Byington, and also Iowa's Ben McCollum to be on (UNC's) list." -… pic.twitter.com/fYw3aGfrgS
Mark Byington, Vanderbilt head coach
No. Why not just keep Hubert Davis if Byington is the option? What has he ever done to make anyone think that he's anything more than a first-weekend tournament coach? He'll give you 20-ish wins each season, a top-eight finish in the ACC and might get to the Round of 32. That's fine for Vanderbilt or Wake Forest, but not up to the North Carolina standard. He seems like a nice guy and Dukie V loves him, but he's not the guy that will take the Tar Heels where they want to be. Byington also signed an extension with Vanderbilt and the return on the investment in that buyout is risky.
Josh Schertz, Saint Louis head coach
There are some things to really like about Schertz. He has worked his way up from D2, where he was really successful with Lincoln Memorial. And he's averaged over 25 wins in his past four seasons in Division 1 with Indiana State and Saint Louis. This is less about coaching and more about fit. I think Schertz is a really good coach, but he doesn't seem like a great fit and there's a feeling that he'd never get the support he would need to get Carolina to consistent deep tournament runs.
Grant McCasland, Texas Tech head coach
Of the three coaches on this list, McCasland is the one I could see Bubba Cunningham being the most intrigued by. Much like Schertz, there are a lot of things to like about McCasland. He's won tournaments with North Texas. Are the CBI and NIT anything to get excited about for North Carolina fans? Absolutely not. But there is something to be said about getting into a tournament and finishing the job. He's been to an Elite Eight with Texas Tech already and probably would've gotten further this year if JT Toppin hadn't torn his ACL. This issue here is comfort. McCasland is a Texas guy that's spent the great majority of his career in the Lone Star State. He would take the UNC job if offered. I have no doubt about that, but would he be comfortable in Chapel Hill?
