With the 2026-2027 college basketball season just a few weeks away, the eligibility status of fifth-year big man Cemraon Fens is still very much a concern for Michael Malone and the Tar Heels.
Brought in to provide some veteran depth in the frontcourt, Fens is currently waiting to see if he'll actually be able to compete for the Tar Heels this season. While we wait for further clarification, UNC is acting (at least for exhibition games) as if Fens will not be available come opening night.
Michael Malone confirms Cameron Fens won't play against USC
When the Tar Heels travel to Greensboro for their exhibition clash with the USC Trojans, Fens will not suit up.
UNC transfer big man Cameron Fens will not play in Friday’s exhibition vs. USC in Greensboro. He’s still not eligible.

At ACC Tipoff in Charlotte on Wednesday, Malone confirmed that Fens will not play when his team opens up preseason action.
“Cameron will not play Friday night,” Malone said. “He’s technically ineligible at the moment. He’s been practicing every day and is a big part of what we’ve been doing, and we’re going to let this process play out.”
Fens committed to UNC for his fifth season of college basketball on August 7, after a court granted him an injunction that gave him an additional season of eligibility. Less than three weeks later, a Tennessee Court of Appeals ruling reversed those plans, adding uncertainty to UNC's frontcourt situation.
Now, over six weeks later, Fens remains ineligible but has been practicing with the team in hopes that this ruling is overturned yet again.
Of course, the hope is that Fens will be able to suit up for the UNC basketball program this season. He is a talented player who definitely can help the Tar Heels on both ends of the floor, as his skillset compliments the other frontcourt pieces rather nicely.
Not having a decision at this point is not only hurting the student-athlete from participating and getting some much-needed game reps with his new team, but it's hurting teams across the country who are trying to get their rosters situated before the regular season begins in just a few short weeks.
On the flip side, UNC can use this opportunity to learn more about its current group of guys. While Malone would love to have Fens on the court, this gives him and his staff a chance to see what the other frontcourt pieces can bring to the table, better preparing them for a season that might not include Fens at all.
At some point, UNC needs to see which lineups and strategies work best if this ruling isn't overturned.
The right plan at this time is to prepare for life without Cameron Fens. It's better to be prepared than trying to figure it out on the fly, as Malone and his staff will have the team ready to be in the best position to win games come November 2.
Until then (and potentially into the start of the 2026-2027 season), the fifth-year eligibility status for Fens and hundreds of other players in this situation across the country will continue to take center stage.
