For years, the story of Caleb Love's departure from North Carolina seemed relatively straightforward.
Maybe it wasn't.
Love added a fascinating new wrinkle to the end of his Tar Heel career during a recent TikTok Live, revealing that transferring from Chapel Hill wasn't necessarily what he wanted.
“I was gonna stay. I wanted to stay.”

That's a significant revelation from one of the most polarizing North Carolina basketball players in recent memory.
Caleb Love's comments make his UNC departure even more interesting
We all remember the circumstances surrounding Love's exit.
After a magical run to the national title game, the Tar Heels entered the 2022-23 season ranked No. 1 in the country and returned four of their five starters. Instead of finishing the job, the Tar Heels became one of college basketball's biggest disappointments, failing even to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Changes were inevitable.
Love ultimately entered the transfer portal, ending his three-year run at North Carolina that featured just about everything imaginable. There were unforgettable highs, including his iconic three-pointer against Duke in the 2022 Final Four, along with plenty of frustrating moments that made him one of the most debated Tar Heels of his era.
When Love left, it was easy to view the split as a mutual parting.
North Carolina could reshape its roster after a disastrous season, building around guard RJ Davis, while Love could find a fresh start elsewhere.
Now more than three years later, Love is telling us that apparently wasn't his plan.
He wanted to stay.
Of course, that immediately creates a question that Love's brief comment doesn't completely answer:
If Caleb Love wanted to stay at North Carolina, what changed?
Don't fill in the blanks ourselves. Love didn't say in this comment that he was forced out, and saying he wanted to stay doesn't automatically tell us what conversations happened behind the scenes,
but it certainly adds another layer to the story.
This wasn't simply a player who decided his time at North Carolina had run its course and immediately went searching for something new. At least, according to Love, he once envisioned returning to Chapel Hill for another season.
Instead, he entered the transfer portal, initially committing to Michigan before he ultimately ended up at Arizona, a move that paid off for Love.
Love became the Pac-12 Player of the Year in his first season at Arizona, helping the Wildcats earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Ironically, his post-UNC success only fueled years of debate over whether the Tar Heels were better off without him and whether Love needed to leave North Carolina to unlock the next stage of his career.
Let's remember: Davis went on to earn the ACC Player of the Year in that same season. While both players were good together, they were elite apart.
Of course, the question of what could've been if he hadn't left will always remain unanswered for Tar Heel fans.
In an alternate universe, Love returns for the 2023-24 season and joins a roster featuring RJ Davis, Armando Bacot, Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, and Elliot Cadeau, a group that ultimately earned a No. 1 seed and reached the Sweet 16.
How would Love's return affect that team's roster construction? Does his presence force Cadeau not to reclass, or does UNC not pursue a guy like Ryan (a much-needed veteran on that team) given the lack of need?
How Love would've fit on that team (and how his return would've impacted the roster) is something we'll never know.
Maybe the fresh start was ultimately best for everyone involved. Love found tremendous individual success after leaving Chapel Hill, while Hubert Davis reconstructed the Tar Heels into one of the best teams in the country the following season.
But that's what makes Love's admission so fascinating.
For years, we've known that Caleb Love left North Carolina. We just might not have known the entire story of why.
It took Love six simple words on a TikTok live appearance to make this story a lot more fascinating.
