Caleb Hood posts an emotional social media message to announce his retirement

Caleb Hood is ready for the next chapter in his life.

The fifth-year senior announced on social media that he is retiring from the sport of football. A Rockingham, North Carolina native, Hood appeared in 31 games during his time with the UNC football program.

“After much thought and prayer and discussion with my family, I have decided to retire from the sport of football. My journey at UNC has been special, and I appreciate my time here. I am excited to start the next chapter and will always take my memories of Carolina with me. I want to thank Coach Belichick, Coach Kitchens, and Coach Means for giving me an opportunity, as well as all my other coaches and teammates throughout my years of football for the impact they’ve all had on my life!”

A dynamic playmaker, Hood's college career was hampered by injuries. The talented running back never appeared in more than seven games in a single season, as the struggle for him to stay healthy was unfortunate to say the least.

Regardless, Hood grinded, always putting in the effort to be there for his team. Even when he couldn't suit up, he always served as a team-first guy, making an impact however he possibly could.

On the field, he had some dynamic moments, including scoring the touchdown on the opening drive against TCU to kickoff the Bill Belichick era.

While he didn't specify why he decided to retire now, his health could've played a factor in his decision. After battling for so long, it's possible that his body just wasn't able to keep up with the constant pressure that the sport requires.

Regardless of whether or not that's the reasoning behind it, it's important for us all to take a moment to thank Caleb Hood for his contributions to the UNC football program during his five years on campus. He left a profound mark on the program and is destined for great things as he prepares for the next chapter in his life.
