Cade Bennerman is a man with something to prove.
After spending his first college season redshirting at Northwestern, Bennerman is preparing for the next step in his development. For Michael Malone, the task is figuring out how quickly that development can produce minutes he can trust in the frontcourt.
While he won't be rushed, the hope is that he develop into a consistent contributor in the very near future.

What Cade Bennerman brings to UNC
Bennerman gives UNC another seven-footer to develop and evaluate in its frontcourt.
Height alone won’t establish his role. The useful contributions would be setting solid screens, reaching the right defensive position, contesting without fouling, and securing rebounds.
Given he didn't play last season, it's hard to grasp just where he is in terms of his overall development. However, UNC's staff saw something in him to take a chance on him, believing they can develop him into a quality rotation player for the program moving forward.
The biggest question surrounding Cade Bennerman
How quickly can he become ready for meaningful college minutes?
A year in a college program offers experience, but game situations bring a different test. Bennerman will have to adjust to stronger opponents, faster decisions, and the consequences of being a step late defensively.
Physical development and understanding his assignments will both matter.
Like we saw with Isaiah Denis a season ago, is Bennerman ready for a similar leap? Will he need time to adjust, especially to a new program that plays on a bigger stage? All of these questions are valid to ask when evaluating Bennerman ahead of his first season in Chapel Hill.
What does a successful season look like for Cade Bennerman?
Success would mean clear progress toward becoming a dependable frontcourt option.
Depending on the outcome of Cameron Fens' eligibility case, the Tar Heels may need to throw Bennerman into the fire sooner rather than later. Of course, if Fens can play, it gives Malone and his staff another viable option, but if he's not available, guys like Bennerman could definitely get minutes off the bench in certain situations.
Development will be key for Bennerman, no matter how many minutes he ends up playing. Every rep will matter in this long-term picture.
The bottom line
UNC could really benefit from this developmental project becoming a success.
There's a lot to like about Bennerman's skillset, and the hope is that he'll continue to grow and develop as a player. Expect the likes of Sean May, Deon Thompson and others to be heavily focused on developing Bennerman over time, as he could end up being one of those under-the-radar additions who ends up becoming a big-time player for the UNC basketball program.
