Bill Belichick refusing to tip his UNC QB hand leaves everyone guessing for Week 1

As we all expected, Belichick isn't tipping his hand as to who will be the team's starting quarterback this upcoming season.

Bill Belichick is known for not being a guy who typically tips his hand.

The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach isn't a guy who is going to just hand out free information. Instead, he typically keeps things close to vest, not revealing too much in order to maintain a bit of a competitive advantage.

One of the major questions surrounding the UNC football program this season is who will be under center when the Tar Heels open up the 2026 campaign in Ireland against TCU on August 29.

If you expected Belichick to reveal the answer at the ACC Kickoff event, you unfortunately gave yourself false hope.

Bill Belichick is in no rush to name his 2026 starting quarterback

Belichick was asked about his team's quarterback competition during a media session on Friday morning in Charlotte.

The good news is that Belichick confirmed that his top four quarterbacks, transfers Billy Edwards Jr. and Miles O'Neill, returner Au'Tori Newkirk, and incoming freshman Travis Burgess are all healthy at this time.

When it comes to who the leader is in that pack, Belichick offered a brief quote that gave us the update we were looking for.

“There’s no leaders in the clubhouse,” Belichick said. “Everybody’s out on the course.”

Christo Kelly reveals a Bill Belichick detail that perfectly explains who he is

Let's remember: there's still a little over a month before the Tar Heels are scheduled to take the field in Ireland. At this point, Belichick probably isn't lying when he says that an open competition is brewing in Chapel Hill for the starting quarterback gig, one that could change over the next couple of weeks.

While he did say that everyone is still competing, you'd have to expect that at this point, someone has hopefully started to pull away from the competition.

Edwards Jr. might be that guy, given he's essentially the lone guy in that room who has legitimate college football experience under his belt. When he was brought in via the transfer portal, it was expected that he would at least be a heavy competitor for the job, given his reputation of having a strong arm and being a very capable passer at this level.

O'Neill followed Bobby Petrino, the Tar Heels' new offensive coordinator, to Chapel Hill and could factor in given his knowledge and understanding of the type of offense Petrino likes to run.

Newkirk saw limited action a season ago but could show strides of improvement after last season, while Burgess just might be the wildcard in this equation, given he was a highly-touted recruit with a ton of potential but is also coming off an injury that derailed his senior season of high school.

It will be a storyline to follow over the next few weeks for sure leading up to the start of the new season, one that the Tar heels hope is a lot better than the one they experienced in year one of the Belichick era.

For now, Belichick isn't ready to reveal his plans at quarterback, but he let the world know that an open competition is brewing, with four guys competing for the spot.
