We don't have to tell you that Bill Belichick's first UNC season didn't go to plan. Did we all have way too high expectations for his first season? Yup, as just about everyone thought the coaching legend would be able to turn things around for Carolina overnight. That wasn't the case, and the off-field drama made things worse.
Steve Newmark tempers expectations for Bill Belichick’s second season at UNC
However, Belichick worked overtime once the transfer portal opened to bring in elite talent, and the hope is the Tar Heels will be able to make a big jump this upcoming fall. Is this team going to push for a Playoff spot? That's not likely, but positive steps will continue to be taken. Despite that, could he be on the hot seat if UNC tanks again?
That's what Brooks Austin seems to have on his mind. Just recently, he released his list of college football coaches entering the new season on the hot seat, and people were left stunned, with Belichick featured. With the greatest of respect for Austin and the work he does, no chance BB deserved to be included:

Any talk of Bill Belichick being on the hot seat at UNC seems a bit silly
Some of the other names above? Yes, we agree with it 100 percent, including Shane Beamer and Luke Fickell - it was a bit of a surprise they weren't let go this past offseason. As for Belichick, he went 4-8 during his debut season in Chapel Hill, which, of course, wasn't good enough. However, Director of Athletics Steve Newmark went ahead and preached patience to fans as he enters Year 2.
"I don't think that wins and losses are the sole barometer, particularly in college sports," Newmark said. "You want to see improvement, as I mentioned, as we go through the season, and I'm confident we'll do that. They're building a program, and I think you have to give coaches time to be able to do that."
Those words from Newmark tell us everything we need to know about Belichick and his future with North Carolina. Newmark, taking over for Bubba Cunningham, knows that Belichick and his staff need more time to get the football program back to where fans want it to be. You don't bring in a great like Belichick in a stunning move, only to fire him after two disappointing seasons.
All signs point to Belichick being here for the long haul and retiring with UNC rather than jumping to a different team. Again, we're not expecting the Tar Heels to push for an ACC title this season and bring down Miami in the process, but Belichick is a football genius, so he'll be ready to wipe away the bad memories from the four-win campaign last year.
If the fanbase does end up calling for him to get fired mid-season, then sure, we'll admit that we were way off base. However, barring a shocker, we also don't think that's going to happen here, and Belichick will remind plenty of people why UNC decided to hire him in the first place.
