One of the biggest plays of the game for North Carolina came right at the start of the second half.
Trailing 21-14, UNC looked to build momentum after a touchdown-scoring drive to end the first half. What North Carolina didn't realize was that freshman Jaden Jefferson, on his first touch of the football at the college level, had something special brewing.
The Tar Heels simply couldn't have asked for a better start to the second half, as Jefferson took the kickoff 98 yards to the house!

While UNC would go on to botch the extra point attempt, the score really made it seem like the Tar Heels had a chance to pull off the upset. It didn't work out the way UNC hoped it would afterward, but that play alone is one that drew a lot of attention for a variety of reasons.
Bill Belichick had an absolute classic response when he was asked about the kick return touchdown following the game.
Belichick’s wild comparison shows the impact of Jefferson’s return
At least Belichick had some humor (if you can even call it that) following his team's loss to Notre Dame.
Belichick's wild take on Jefferson's kickoff return is one that will give everyone a brief chuckle.
"Kickoff return—I mean, that's probably more yards on that return than we had all last year on all the returns combined, close to it. I think we were the worst kickoff return team in the country last year.
So, that was an explosive play that got us back in the game in conjunction with that long drive."
The Tar Heels' head coach is right: last year's return unit was downright pitiful. How many times did North Carolina find itself in horrible field position last year because of the kick return team's struggles?
While we all try to forget last season, Belichick made a good point with this one.
Sure, it's one return, but how awesome was that to see from a true freshman who most fans probably never even heard of prior to that big play. It would be awesome for UNC if Jefferson can continue to be an elite return man, building off this incredible touchdown return to continue providing the Tar Heels excellent field position to work with.
Special teams can sometimes be undervalued, but it's so important to be successful in this aspect of the game if you want to be a winning program. Belichick understands that, having coached for such a long time, so you know that he places a huge emphasis on special trams whenever the Tar Heels are putting in the work on the field or in the film room.
Sometimes, all it takes is one big return for it to click. The Tar Heels hope that Jaden Jefferson can build on this success, which, in Belichick's words, is already a major improvement from what we saw during the 2025 season.
