Bill Belichick fires another coach who had everyone furious in UNC’s loss to Duke

The special teams blunders, especially down the stretch, made this move an expected one.

Freddie Kitchens wasn't the only coach relieved of his duties by the UNC football program on Friday.

Shortly after the Kitchens news was revealed, another coaching announcement was made: the Tar Heels are also parting ways with special teams coach Mike Priefer.

Priefer has a short stint in Chapel Hill

Bill Belichick brought in the 59-year-old to run the special teams unit. Before his lone season in Chapel Hill, Priefer gained extensive NFL experience in the same role, spending time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, and Cleveland Browns.

One game may have sealed Priefer's fate

No one, and I mean, no one, wants to be reminded of the UNC football program's loss to Duke.

However, special teams absolutely killed the Tar Heels in that game and served as the deciding factor, one that went in the favor of the Blue Devils.

A roughing the kicker penalty resulted in an extended drive for Duke, one that finished with a touchdown. Late in the game, UNC got duped into falling for a fake field goal attempt, one that allowed Duke to score a go-ahead touchdown.

While you'd think the sample size from the entire season would be the indication of why this move was made, look no further than the final home game of the regular season against the Blue Devils to see just why this move was made.

That fake field goal will be a play that we'll all have to see on repeat when this annual matchup comes around each year.

Bill Belichick's statement on the coaching moves

Bill Belichick released a statement regarding the decision to part ways with both Kitchens and Priefer.

“We want to thank Coach Kitchens and Coach Priefer for their commitment and many contributions to our program and student-athletes. We wish them both nothing but the best in their future endeavors.”
