It has been a hectic start to the week in terms of players announcing they're entering the transfer portal, with one of the most eye-opening ones no question being DJ Lagway. A former 5-star prospect out of high school, Lagway didn't live up to the hype with Florida.
3 potential offensive coordinator candidates for UNC and Bill Belichick to go after
However, he's now ready to find a new home once the transfer portal opens up early next month. As you might have been able to guess, some fans have been calling for Bill Belichick and North Carolina to make a move here, while others are saying to stay away. From our chair? Going after Lagway could make a ton of sense for the Heels.

DJ Lagway entering the transfer portal is something UNC must keep an eye on
For those who are against this - we get it. Coming out of the 2024 class, Lagway was ranked the No. 3 quarterback in the country and the No. 1 player from Texas. During his freshman season, he looked electric at times, but also showcased some brutal mistakes, which were expected from someone so young.
However, Lagway didn't make the leap people were hoping to see out of him as a sophomore. He finished the year throwing for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and a concerning 14 interceptions. The turnovers were frustrating and his inconsistent play was disappointing to see.
However, if there's anyone who can help turn around someone who hasn't lived up to their 5-star status, it'd be Belichick. The GOAT coach and the Heels are expected to be on the hunt for a new starter, as Gio Lopez, brought in last offseason, had a rough 2025 campaign in Chapel Hill.
Bryce Baker, a 4-star signee from the 2025 class, is waiting in the wings and could look to get his shot in '26. However, what if Belichick brought in someone like Lagway to help bridge the gap before Baker fully takes over? Would that cause Baker to transfer himself? We'd like to think not. Lagway is a signal-caller who provides plenty of upside and he could serve as a mentor for Baker. It's an idea that at minimum needs to be discussed, as the gamble could prove to be worth it for UNC.
