A transfer from Michigan State, Johnson committed to the Tar Heels essentially two weeks following the hiring of Bill Belichick. The hope was that he was going to contribute to a revamped wide receiver room, a unit that returned some unexperienced talent to the mix.
Unfortunately, that didn't pan out.
The 6-foot, 175-pound redshirt sophomore played in just one of the UNC football program's three games this season, recording five total snaps in the Week 2 win at Charlotte. He was targeted twice in the passing game, recording a reception for six yards and a drop.
Of course, there will be plenty of speculation as to why Johnson has left the program so early in his tenure in Chapel Hill. It could be for a variety of reasons, but the easy assumption would be to think that the fit wasn't right for him.
Now, Johnson will be looking for yet another home, attempting to find a place where he can find a suitable role and can contribute at a high level for another program.
For now, Johnson is a subtraction to the UNC football program's wide receiver room, a unit that still is searching for others (not named Jordan Shipp and Chris Culliver) to contribute in some way, shape or form.
