The UNC basketball program's loss to Stanford was one that had the college basketball world swirling.
After losing the first 13 matchups between the two teams, Stanford came to Chapel Hill and ended the skid with a last-second shot to win it. The loss for North Carolina felt (and still feels) like a brutal one as the UNC basketball program's NCAA Tournament hopes continue to look worse by the day.
Following the loss, college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman didn't hold back in regard to the future of Hubert Davis as the head coach of the Tar Heels:
"At some point, we've gotta start the conversation of what's going on with Hubert Davis. It's been such a rollercoaster... Going to the tournament every other year, it's just not good enough."
Goodman is correct: it has been a rollercoaster since Hubert Davis has taken over as the program's head coach. A miraculous run to the Final Four in his first season was followed by a year of disappointment, as the Tar Heels missed the NCAA tournament even with the return of four starters from the team that ended up being the national runner up in 2022.
Last season, the UNC basketball program secured an ACC regular season title and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Now, the Tar Heels are trending toward missing the big dance once again, as this is not a trend that UNC basketball fans are accustomed to (or are okay with for that matter).
If the Tar Heels miss out on the NCAA Tournament this season, Goodman might be on the right track with his comments. Failure to turn things around over the final few weeks of the regular season could lead to the university really taking a closer look at Davis' status as the program's leader.
