In case you thought they were just sitting around doing nothing, Jim Tanner, Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program have been contacting potential transfer portal targets.

Joe Tipton of On3 reported that the Tar Heels will actually be hosting a Zoom meeting on Tuesday with one of these targets: West Virginia transfer Jonathan Powell.

Don't let West Virginia fans see this. They are still likely sour about North Carolina "stealing" their spot in the NCAA Tournament field.

Anyways, Powell is a 6-foot-6 guard from Dayton, Ohio. He played his freshman season at West Virginia but is now pursuing other options with the coaching change happening with the program.

Mostly as a starter, Powell averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per-game. He had some strong performances during his freshman season, scoring a season-high 17 points on two separate occasions.

The UNC basketball program is looking to add size essentially across the board, as Powell would certainly fit that bill. Standing at 6-foot-6, Powell is a guy who could fit at either at guard or on the wing, as his versatility would open up lineup opportunities for Hubert Davis to work with.

Of course, the transfer portal recruitment is like speed dating- programs across the country look to make an early impression on potential recruits. In the same token, the programs look to see which players best fit what they are looking for, as the fit (both on the court and in terms of NIL) are major aspects that aslo need to be considered.

There's no doubt that there will be more players that the UNC basketball program is linked to, but the clear players of interest will certainly start to emerge over the next few weeks.

The question remains: will Jonathan Powell be one of them?
