Back in January, four-star safety prospect Jakob Weatherspoon committed to Ohio State. The Avon, Ohio native had plans to play his college football career within his home state, but when Bill Belichick and the UNC football program came knocking, Weatherspoon's plans drastically changed.
Weatherspoon has officially flipped his commitment from Ohio State to North Carolina. He becomes the second-highest ranked recruit that the UNC football program has landed during the 2026 recruiting cycle.

North Carolina began to show interest about a month after his commitment to Ohio State. The interest from the Tar Heels sparked Weatherspoon's interest, proceeding in him scheduling an official visit to campus.
The 5-foot-10 safety made his visit to Chapel Hill on June 6 and proceeded to make one more stop at Ohio State before making his decision, one that is major news for the UNC football program.
Weatherspoon is ranked by 247Sports Composite as the No. 14-ranked safety in the country. He's coming off a season in which he helped lead Avon High School to a state championship.
Yes, we say this often (given the amount of prospects the Tar Heels have landed), but you have to give Michael Lombardi, Bill Belichick and the rest of the UNC football staff a ton of credit for what they've been able to build with this recruiting class. A top-20 ranked recruiting class that features a staggering 33 student-athletes, the Tar Heels have brought in some talent that they firmly believe will help shape this new era of UNC football under Belichick's leadership.
It's exciting times in Chapel Hill for fans of the UNC football program, as the Tar Heels have been successful in adding some outstanding high school talent that will help build the program's future rosters.
